Keep the Skinny Birds Flying Safely
Have you ever visited the multiple sights that Porterfield operated out of? Most of the buildings are gone, but one of the survivors is home to a company that deals in rubber matting for playgrounds.
Restoring an old lady of the sky takes a lot of commitment. Starting on a whim rarely ends with completion. I wonder whatever became of your friends Collegiate...
$18K is a reasonable price for a flying Collegiate, if she's in good shape. There's an old adage of "never buy a plane out of Texas, especially if it has fresh paint," so scrutinize the old girl if you look at her. There's a CP-50 project with an A65 in Bryan, TX, sitting in a self-storage unit. Owned by a man with a motorcycle shop, he inherited her from his Dad, but doesn't fly. I have photos of her, if your interested. I think she's worth about $5K, but the owner may think she's worth more.
Soft landings,
Andy
Welcome to our wee club for the skinny birds, David! There's an LP-65 with an A65 for sale, a ways south of you for $18K. Look in the Forum for details.
If you're over 5'10" and 180 pounds, you probably won't fit or be very comfortable in the Collegiate. They're soloed from the front seat only and the instrument panel is literally a foot from your chin. It seems claustrophobic at first, but you'll become acclimated to it by the time you're at the end of the runway, ready to take off.
Soft landings,
Andy
