"I have been looking to buy a porterfield for some time now. I am interested in a 35W if I can find one for sale. The owners of these models don't seem to want to part with them which is very understandable. I'll keep an eye out anyway."

I know of one sitting in a barn, collecting bird poop, near Buffalo, NY, at a wee grass strip near a winery.  I have a set of wings and tail surfaces for one, but haven't been able to track down the fuselage. If you can locate the drawings, you could weld up your own fuselage...all my drawings are for the Collegiate. I think the Collegiate and Flyabout fuselages are very similar, structurally.

If you're looking to buy one that's airworthy, or at worst, out of annual, you could try looking up the type in the FAA registry and contacting their owners to see if any would consider selling their old gals. The Flyabout owners tend to keep to themselves, or maybe they're just overshadowed by the more boisterous Collegiate owners.

Every once in a while, a member will work up a list of current owners, but that hasn't happened in quite a while.

Please let us know how it works out!

Welcome to our wee club for the skinny birds, James!  There are quite a few projects and a few flying Collegiates available and lots of info in the forum and blog sections. If you’re over 6’ and 180 pounds, you’ll find the Porterfield uncomfortably small. Solo is from the front, where the panel is literally a foot from your face.  There are three Collegiates based at Upland, so you should be able to find one to sit in and try her on for size.
