Does anyone know what the proper altimeter might be for a 1940 Collegiate? Ours is odd in that there is no pressure window to set for the current baro pressure. One sets the faceplate to align with…Continue

NC27249 Gracing The Sky Again!

I’m happy to say that after over two years, 249er is back in the air. During a very local flight back in April of 2021, I experienced a BIG drop in oil pressure on my A65 (40 psi to 8 psi). After an…Continue

Hello, I thought I’d ask for opinions on what seems to be the best all-around propeller for the Continental A65 on a collegiate. We’ve been running a wood Sensenich, 72/42 for quite some time, and I…Continue

Continental A65 .020 crankshaft main bearings.

Anyone happen to have a new set of these laying around? Been waiting since May so my engine shop can finish NC27249s overhaul. Would possibly settle for a yellow tag .010 or standard crankshaft as…Continue

Does anyone know what the proper altimeter might be for a 1940 Collegiate? Ours is odd in that there is no pressure window to set for the current baro pressure. One sets the faceplate to align with the needle for the known field elevation before take off. Not a lot of help if one is flying to a higher or lower pressure area. See attached photo which was taken in flight at 2,500 asl. Thanks! MarkSee More

NC27249 Gracing The Sky Again!

I’m happy to say that after over two years, 249er is back in the air. During a very local flight back in April of 2021, I experienced a BIG drop in oil pressure on my A65 (40 psi to 8 psi). After an expedited landing, I drained the oil through a T shirt rag and what remained in the rag reminded me of that metal looking spray paint I used to use on car models as a kid. I thought for sure I’d spun a bearing. We were always a bit leery of that engine, so decided to bite the bullet and have it…See More

"Yes for metal props the TCDS gives only a couple options but with wood or adjustable hubs by my interpretation you have a very wide scope of options as long as it meets the length and static RPM requirements. We put the current prop on as a test…"

"Could you have meant to say 72” 40 pitch? Our CP 65 is only approved for a 72 inch 42 or 44 inch pitch. If you have a 50 inch pitch on there, that would explain the terrible client performance. Mark"

"I have a 72” 50 pitch on mine. Just finished flying the first 10 hours since its last flight in 1965. I can tell you it meets the minimum RPM but really lacks climb performance. Highly suggest something with less pitch. One that note does…"

"A pitch of 44 or 46 will allow you to see the speeds that the M-6 airfoil affords, while marginally limiting your climb performance. TCDS A-720 specifies, for the CP-65, static rpm at full power for a Landplane: Not over 2165 rpm, not under 1860…"

Propeller for CP 65

Hello, I thought I’d ask for opinions on what seems to be the best all-around propeller for the Continental A65 on a collegiate. We’ve been running a wood Sensenich, 72/42 for quite some time, and I am considering moving up to a 44 pitch. I know I would be giving up some climb performance but my cruise speeds are about 83 miles an hour. Not too shabby by any means but some documentation is touting 92 or 93. Any and all thoughts would be appreciated!K T S B F!MarkSee More

Profile Information

About Me:
My wife and I are the proud owners and caretakers NC27249, #738, a 1940 LP65 (with a Continental 65). This airplane was purchased new by my wife’s grandfather who owned it until about the time the war started. My wife’s father was able to reacquire it in the early 90s in need of restoration. It sat for many years, and was finally restored to pristine conditions in 2015. It’s so cool that my wife and I both get to fly her grandfathers airplane.

LP 65 hub caps

Hello, I've heard that L5 Hub caps will work on the Porterfield. Anybody have any ideas of others that might? I think they would look sharp on our old girl. Thanks Mark NC27249

Landing Gear Rubber

I recently replaced the landing gear rubber on our 1940 LP65. The old ones were cracked and sagging and in dire need of replacement. I talked with Leroy Blum about this via the telephone, and he was very informative. I acquired the rubber stock from L.A. Rubber at a reasonable cost. On this website, I found a link to a photo of the original blueprint showing the proper dimensions (diameter, square hole size, and radius of corners) Near our airport, Arlington Municipal (AWO), I found an… Continue
