Defense Plant Corporation

Greetings fellow Porterfield admirers. Back in March, Andy posted about an LP-65 on Barnstormers. The ad called it a "warbird" because it was transferred to the Defense Plant Corporation (DPC) in 1942-1944. Our Skinny Bird NC27249, was also owned by the DPC from 3/12/43 until 8/8/44. What is the consensus on this qualification for such status? I would imagine DPC used these birds for primary pilot training to support our country's defense efforts. Every Cub, Champ, Luscombe andT-Craft must have…See More

"I always used grease, but the silicone should work, provided all the existing lube has been washed off. Esso put out a lube chart for the Collegiate. I'll have to look through my files for it and scan it to post here."

Trim “jack screw” lube

Any advice for lubricating the  threaded portion of the trim adjustment under the pilots seat?  My A&P suggested silicone spray lube as it is dry and wouldn’t attract any contaminants like LPS3 might. The mechanism works fine dry, but I’d sure like to help it out so it will last longer. See More

"Jerry Turner could be a good source for placards for someone finishing a restoration. I was able to find someone to make an additional trim placard to add to the rear of the pilot seat for the passenger. "

Profile Information

About Me:
My wife and I are the proud owners and caretakers NC27249, #738, a 1940 LP65 (with a Continental 65). This airplane was purchased new by my wife’s grandfather who owned it until about the time the war started. My wife’s father was able to reacquire it in the early 90s in need of restoration. It sat for many years, and was finally restored to pristine conditions in 2015. It’s so cool that my wife and I both get to fly her grandfathers airplane.

LP 65 hub caps

Hello, I've heard that L5 Hub caps will work on the Porterfield. Anybody have any ideas of others that might? I think they would look sharp on our old girl. Thanks Mark NC27249

Landing Gear Rubber

I recently replaced the landing gear rubber on our 1940 LP65. The old ones were cracked and sagging and in dire need of replacement. I talked with Leroy Blum about this via the telephone, and he was very informative. I acquired the rubber stock from L.A. Rubber at a reasonable cost. On this website, I found a link to a photo of the original blueprint showing the proper dimensions (diameter, square hole size, and radius of corners) Near our airport, Arlington Municipal (AWO), I found an… Continue
